The benefits of why you should workout as a couple

Studies have shown that couples who have been together for a while, and more specifically those who live together, often tend to mirror one another’s health habits. It’s very easy to get ‘comfortable’ in a long-term relationship, but it’s also been said that couples who sweat together, stay together.

So what exactly are the benefits of exercising with your significant other? Well, you’re about to find out!

  1. Look good for one another

Working out with your better half is the perfect way for the both of you to get in great shape, not just for each other but also for yourself. It has been proven that exercising as a couple increases weight loss. A university study conducted showed that almost 5,000 of married men who were in good health and shape tended to also have wives in great health. In correlation to this, research also found that an active husband meant he was three times more likely to have an active wife and a happier relationship.

  1. Keep each other motivated

It’s easy to get lazy and make up excuses to not go to the gym or attend your yoga class, especially after a long, hard day at work. The good thing about exercising with your partner is that they can act as your personal trainer and motivator, adding that extra boost of inspiration you need along with the actual professionals themselves, such as London based personal trainers Livefit. They will be there to cheer you on and make you feel glad you went for that 30 minute jog after all!

3. Stress relief

Although it shouldn’t, being in a relationship can often be one of life’s biggest stresses. Working out in general, but particularly with each other releases some of that tension and atmosphere, and has proven to be one of the best and most effective stress relievers (beats all of that counseling stuff!) When we exercise, chemicals called endorphins are released in our bodies. They interact with our brains sending out positive feelings after a workout, leaving you and your partner happy and relaxed!

  1. Shows you’re still interested

As much as a girl would like to hear she’s beautiful every day, or for a woman to show how much she loves her husband by cooking his dinner every night, that affection begins to wear off after time. What better way to show your partner you still love them after all the years gone by without saying it all the time, than by you both committing time and energy towards continuously improving your health and fitness, and therefore increasing your life expectancy too. It’s the perfect way of showing your love to one another.

  1. Spend more time together

With a busy workload and the hectic lives we lead, it’s rare that we get to spend quality time with our partners during the week. Working out as a couple is the perfect way to spend time with each other, and when you are together it’s less likely to feel like a chore to exercise. Who knows, you might even want to spend more time in the gym just knowing that you’re getting to see more of your other half in the week.

  1. Competition is a good

Studies from the Annals of Behavioural Medicine have shown that exercising with your partner can double each of your performances, which is due to positive competition. That’s not to say that every time you workout together you’re trying to out-do one another (that could ruin a relationship), but a bit of healthy competition never harmed anyone! Pushing each other to better themselves is a great way to step up each of your performances and cuts any slacking from a workout.

  1. Increase emotional bond

Exercising together has proven to create connections which positively impacts a relationship. Whether it’s in the gym, on the track or a walk in the park, mimicking your partner’s behaviour creates greater emotional bonds with each other and makes you feel more engaged and ‘interested’ in them.

Exercising does not appeal to everyone. Although it has so many health benefits, people still find it hard to get up and workout. With all the positive outcomes that come with working out with your other half, it’s time to try something new within your relationship that you’ll both ream the benefits from!
